      An invitation to write!!!

      Most of English Learning students found writing something difficult for them in their first academic writing. One of the main difficulties in writing especially for Arab students that they are not accustomed in writing articles in their own mother language Arabic. So, no wonder why most of the students found it difficult to write an essay or an article.

      Through this topic, I would like to post down some important points in how to write an essay. Of course, there are some books for academic writing shows us the correct way to write an essay. Yet, let us all here post our experience in writing essays or articles in order to make it easy for other students who are still in their first academic year in University or college.

      So, let us all together discuss how to write an essay. Would anyone like to take the chance and start telling us the best way to write a good essay?

      By the way, writing an article will be just the first step in the invitation for writing and we will develop this topic through your good participations.

    • How to write an essay?

      You are asked to write an essay for example about Majalis Nizwa site. Don't you think it is a good example to start with.

      The first thing we have to do is an outline.
      What is the outline?
      An outline is like doing a brainstorming and think about the points that you wants to include in your essay.
      So let us do our outline.

      An Outline

      1- An introduction
      • Write your main topic sentence in the introduction.
      For example, Majalis Nizwa site is one of the newest and successful Omani websites.

      2- Body paragraphs ( you could include 2 or 3 or 4 or more paragraphs in your body according to your points)
      A) let us discuss in the first page the aim of this site and what is this site originally, Is it an educational one, an organization site , a forum and so on)
      B) in the second paragraph let us talk about the topics and members in this site.
      C) What is the most distinguished thing in this site?
      D) What are the plans of this site for future?


      3- Conclusion
      In conclusion we could just summarize what we wrote up or give some opinions about the site.

    • How to summarize?

      Let us today to learn the technique for summarizing and I know that many students in school found a problem in summarizing and my sister is one of them. SO, let us learn how to summarize a story or a just one or two chapters from a story.

      The first Step: reading the whole story or the passage in order to have a complete background about the topic you are going to summarize.
      Next Step: In case you couldn't understand the story just read it a again. So all what you have to do is just to keep reading the text till you understand it and know everything about it from setting, characters, events and so on.
      Third Step: start reading the story again and this time you should have a pencil or pen and underline the important things. You may wonder what are the important lines that I should underline or highlight. Ok, so let us mentioned these important lines.
      1- You need to underline the setting of the story or the text ( The setting is the place and time which the story is written in).
      2- You need to underline the names of the characters so you could know well each character and its role in the story.
      3- You have to underline an important event happened in the story or the text and that can be about ( crime, rebirth of a new child, something sad, good news, and so on)
      4- You have to underline the conclusion and how the story finished.

      Fourth step: Go back to all the underline lines and try now to write about them. For example, you can start by saying that (( The setting of this story started in Nizwa in 1990 and the most significant characters in this story are X,V, H and so on. The story is talking about ( The important event that you underline or the story might be about one of the characters)


      The fifth and final step: After writing your summary go now and read what you wrote and see if there is something missing and you need to add. After doing that go back and re read your summary again but try this time to correct your mistakes.

    • I decided to write for you the steps of analyzing a poem so we could focus in one particular lesson. I hope that I could help Students of English major. I was one of English literature Students so I am going to write my experience in analyzing poems.

      So let us start this new lesson.
      First step: read your poem for the pleasure of reading. Then go and check the difficult vocabulary. Now, read the poem again so you could understand the lines that you couldn't understand them the first time. Again now go and reread the poem so you could feel that you are very close from this poem.

      Second Step: this step can be before the first step or after it and that is all according to your own interests. In this step, go and read about the poet of this poem. You may say why I should go and read about him? Am I going to find the analysis of this poem in his biography? Why not, give it a try and go and meet this poet. Through reading the biography of the poet, you will have some background about the poet's style and this will help you a lot to understand the poem. You may even find some hints about your poem in the biography and the occasion it was written for. You should try and believe me you will never lose a lot.

      Third Step: most of the students like to use the net in order to get the analysis of the poem. It is a good way and we could find different and thousand articles about this poem. Searching and reading help us to have more information about this poem but many students make a very serious mistake here which is copying. Many doctors can recognize their students' works and they know if it is their own work or they copied it. So, you should be very careful when you use the sources from internet. It is better to read everything related to this poem and then go by yourself and write without going to look again in the articles from the internet.

      Fourth step: This step is in case you could not find any source from the internet that can explain your poem. So, how you are going to explain and analyze by yourself? Here, you should return to the first and second step. The first thing I would like to recommend you is to love what you are doing. If you love your work, you are going to do well on it. Just keep reading the poems many times till you feel that you almost memorize it. Let us follow the next steps:
      - Try now to take each line and look carefully in each word. Try to guess what does the poet means by putting that word in that line. Is it suitable to put that word here in this line or the poet is trying to use this word as a figure or metaphor. So underline the words that you found them very expressive.
      - After focusing in each line of the poem, now focus in each stanza and try to figure by yourself through reading it many times what is that stanza is talking about.
      - You could now write by yourself in each stanza the main idea of it and then give the whole idea of the whole poem from its title in the whole poem.
      - Before starting write your essay, try to check the rhyme and rhythm of the poem through checking the last word in each line.


      I hope these step helped you a little to understand YOUR poem. Now start writing your essay. Of course you need to write the first thing:

      -Your introduction. Sometimes I found it difficult to start in the introduction and that all depends in my mood and inspiration to find a good introduction to start my essay, so if you couldn't write it at the beginning, just leave to the end.

      - The body of the essay the most important things in your essay and writing the body will reflect the whole work of your analysis. Many students wonder how should hey write the body. Let us now give some comments how to write the body and divide it.
      • Try to explain each stanza in a paragraph and discuss everything related to it in that stanza.
      • Or, you could discuss all the stanzas in one paragraph and the next paragraph talk about the images, metaphors and so on.
      • Finally, write your conclusion and the conclusion usually summarizing the whole essay.

    • I hope some of you will find these lessons useful for you. I wrote the steps according to my own experience and I just tried to make it easy for some of you. My writing isn't that perfect so you could add what you want here in this topic or you could just post your own experience in writing so others could benfit from it. I hope this topic will be a good reference for students who are trying to learn English.
