Oman is changing, a scary thought.

Oman is changing, a scary thought.

Oman has been a conservative country until 1970 when HM Sultan Qaboos took over the crown. By that I mean that Islam and tribal traditions played a vital rule in forming people’s thoughts and believes. You know what I talk about. Back then you can’t find a boy and a girl flirting and playing with each other, not especially if they were teenagers.
I’m not talking about the Discrimination between the two genders here; I’m talking about this because I love my country. When you hear other people from different other countries talking about our own Omani Women in a bad way and describing them with sick descriptions, I can’t stand it really. Here I bring this up for your attention to discuss about it and see whether we can find the reasons and the solutions for it. Just to make your life easier of which I’m trying to talk about here, please listen to my story. In short, we were walking (me, my cousin and his wife ) on the beach last week. It was in Qurum just behind the Grand Hayat beach. Anyhow, we were walking with our dinner of course until we got to the chairs at the end of the walking path. We sat down there talking normally, laughing and enjoying the meal. There were at least three or four chairs and there was about a meter distance between each chair (very close to each other). Suddenly, two Omani boys (dressed like Omanis with Dishdasha’s and Kuma of course) they came each with his girlfriend. They sat just besides us and we didn’t say anything as it was a public beach. The worst part of them that they both started to kiss each other in front of us, flirting and touching in a weird ways. I felt so embarrassed and I was astounded. I know that I have encountered with similar situations but not with my family. We all didn’t feel comfortable at all, and I was making comments and made sure he was listening to them. Of course he was too pride of what he was doing in the name of FREEDOM that our government granted him. He belives that kissing and even making love in public places is ok to him and his girlfriend. This habit is rapidly increasing in a scary manner and it seems it won’t stop until we find ourselves in a deep trouble. I’m quite positive that some of you have seen such things too. Four main questions to be raised and discussed here and I wish you all participate so we can all benefit.

What would you do if you were in my place?
Is this only happening in Muscat or all other regions got infected??
What are the solutions to bring up the good image of Oman again??
Who’s responsible for such actions, is it us (citizens) or government or the whole world??

      Looking forward to your help

    • ALSALAM ALIKUM
First of all what did happen before, that you haven't heard about a boy and a girl meet each other until 1970, not becuse thay know islam but becouse they don't have the chance to do it.my mother told me lots of behaviors people did and it is not from islam.
In fact as people learn and learn about islam, and i think we learn more about islam after 1970 ,thay behave better so if we want to talk about changing I think we cannot compare Oman before and after 1970
      ~!@q

Secondly, what you saw unfortunatly you can see it every where in Oman... No... not becouse freedom but becouse no islam in our heart.

As you saw the bad behavior you can see the good behavior and you can't imagine haw many Omani's people i see and i know give the good picture of islam and you are one of them.
    • using the egyptions phrase

      "دا انت ما شفتش حاجة"

      oky
      well

You still havent seen any thing yet bro

      I have seen worse

girls Drinking & dancing break dance

and just to let you know I just ignore them

as long as they dont get over the line
    • :) Thanks NewWay

This subject is a very complicated issue, I would say. And it can be viewed in so many perspectives

First of all, these things happen everywhere in the world, not only Oman, we are no angels here to think that it’s a disaster that something like this is happening… social immorality happens everywhere… no matter what

Maybe we should take the government out of this, and the issues of pre-1970 and the freedom, because, in my opinion, if think that the change in social behaviour of the youngsters in Oman has nothing to do with these political aspects of Oman

Secondly, to tell you the truth, I think back in the 80s and early 90s there was A LOT more social freedom than there is today. Today, and as each day goes by, the religious fundamentalism is taking over people's minds and lives, and along with it comes less and less freedom, so I wouldn’t think that such behaviours can be explained as a result of more freedom.. Because there is not

These couples you saw, NewWay, at the beach... Are four shameless small-minded people... Who have no respect for themselves... let alone for the people around them… But we can’t really explain their behaviours as outsiders… we don’t know them … and we don’t know what’s going in their minds, and their lives

Teenagers (or young people)... anywhere in the world... would do this act... and sensible respectful persons would find this act obscene and shameless... Anywhere in the world

But of course in an Islamic, conservative country such as Oman, it’s even more obscene to see such behaviour in public... regardless of what the motives are!!!!i

I know that there are official personnel who would arrest people in compromising/ obscene acts… because once… around **14 years** ago… my uncle and aunt (siblings) were at the beach together around midnight... And two officers came to them and asked them for proof that they are brother and sister… but my aunt wasn’t carrying any documents on her... Guess what... They took them to the police station and they had to call us to get them out of there... lool

      To answer your questions
What would you do if you were in my place?

I would be really tempted to just walk away, but probably i would say something as you did.. not because its any of my business.. but because i would feel offended too

Is this only happening in Muscat or all other regions got infected??

This is not a disease.. !!! Its been happening everywhere since forever... and just because you haven’t had the chance to be in the presence of such shameless people.. Doesn’t mean they weren’t around before

What are the solutions to bring up the good image of Oman again??

There is no bad image at the first place!!!!!! .... Believe me Oman's social immorality is considered naive and ridiculously childish compared to other societies where its even too horrible to mention what’s going on among their youngsters there

Who’s responsible for such actions, is it us (citizens) or government or the whole world??

It’s the people, of course!!!! I hope that we are not expecting the government to leave its main role of building and enhancing our country.. And go to each family and teach them morals
... and about the world... I guess there are more serious issues going on that just a bunch of idiots kissing each other in the beach

      :) :) :) :)

    • some people would wish if our country would open up and be modernized..in so many other countries its fine.i
i guess this is the excess baggage that comes with the believe of being responsible.i
if i was there i wouldnt do anything..just let it be,who am i to say something like that in action..
it does happen in dubai and bahrain..thats what i saw.i
i dont know about the responsabilty part..i dont wanna repress anyone.just let it be,if u dont like it move away since u r the one who is not comfortable.but then u came first so..the ball is in ur court

      To answer your questions: i

?What would you do if you were in my place

If I was in ur place I would just move away from there in order not to disturb them

??Is this only happening in Muscat or all other regions got infected

I guess only in Muscat no idea about other regions

??What are the solutions to bring up the good image of Oman again

I dont think the image is bad

??Who’s responsible for such actions, is it us (citizens) or government or the whole world

      everyone

It’s shame to hear such stories heh, but it’s worse if we just stayed back and watched the mistake. The truth hurts sometimes but we have to bear. I don’t think it’s too late to start even thinking of a solution for it, don’t you agree??

      Merah
You might have a point there dear. Yes maybe I was driven away with the subject a bit. The problem is that such an act before 1970 would be a big crime and sometimes reached even to killing those Sinners. Am I right??
People back then had more fear to do it, because they knew that if it’s today in your neighbor’s house, tomorrow might be in your own home.

Of course being away from our religion is the cause of all these problems, but why every body here in this Sa7a takes the responsibility away from the government. Isn’t our government is an Islamic government by law and therefore it has the responsibility of putting and making the proper laws to stop this phenomenon.

Merah, thanks for your last comment too.

      3ashooqa
      It’s a serious matter girl..

      Red Dragon
How would you define the RED LINE??
Isn’t kissing each other in a public place is crossing the RED LINE.

      Mrs Unfaithful

I know that we can’t compare an apple with an orange and therefore we can’t compare Oman with France for example in terms of immorality.

Once again, another defender for the government. The government as I think has a very big rule to play this. Freedom and Government laws are two sides of the coin. Why don’t we do like a voting and see how many Omanis think that the government should reinforce some laws to compact this issue. Are you telling me that those youngester’s parents know or knew what their sons and daughters were doing !!!. Or letting them do what they wish is against the freedom our government gave them.

Well it’s really funny Mrs Unfaithful that Islamic fundamentalism is increasing and the same time things like these are increasing from the other end too.
I don’t think those fours guys and girls were engaged even, you know why !! because they would feel Jealous to sit down in a public place and kiss each other. Maybe this is one of the reasons why this is happening…NO JEALOUSY among them or their parents.

That’s really a funny story really. Wait to listen to this. There’s a guy I knew who was also doing such things and one day he was caught by the police and they were trying to force him to come to the office. He was crying to them to let go and promised it would be the last one for him. The problem is the girl left he personal hand bag in her car 40 kgs away. The police couldn’t identify the girl of course and the policeman showed them a whole list of girls whom recently run out of their houses. Imagine a whole list and you think this is a small issue. The funny part is that he didn’t even know her real name even and he lied to them at the first place….

      Omani Asli

      You and I always agree

..well yaa i guess .. but it wil b dame hard .. i mean even if found a solution still we will find some people who dont agree with us not at all!!!1

but who knowz maybe if we tryed .. maybe something well come out of it
    • NewWay

You know, I am a bit confused now about the nature serious issue that you are discussing here

Are you saying that intimate manners should be controlled by law and should not be shown in public?s

Or are you discussing the fact that pre-marital relationships are increasing among Omanis and it needs to be stopped by the Government??s

      OK
For the first assumption, intimate (sexual) acts in public. We would all agree that IT DOESNT MATTER if the couple or married or not.... it’s still OFFENSIVE to do sexual/intimate acts in public... and I’ll have to emphasize again... This is true ANYWHERE in the world... ANY person with enough respect and morals would think this is offensive… Unless it’s a jungle with rowdy people

I totally agree with you that the mere act of any sexual behaviour in public should be controlled and the offenders should questioned and penalized

But to ask the government to step in and control people’s behaviour and their choices of how to live their lives is a bit too much…. immorality would exist as long as humanity exists… I am not saying this as a defender... But just as a speaker of common sense!!!!! … No matter how STRICT the government became... there will be still be youngsters gone wrong

Children are born by their parents… And not by the government....It’s the parent’s responsibility to discipline their children and teach them… in whichever way they find convenient

You’re talking about Islamic fundamentalism as if it was a good thing!!!!! Its not!!! It’s horrible... and frankly speaking… I believe its one of the reasons why such behaviours are increasing… You can’t squeeze tightly on a balloon in the belief of keeping it safe... because it would EXPLODE

What we need is more flexibility in handling such issues... especially among youngsters
    • Dear sir,
I haven't given the government the execuse for what happened in our country but I really don't think that we should through the responsibilities.
As profite Mohammed said you have the responsibiliy to chang what you sow by hand, words or your heart and that would be the least of beleiveness. Now, do you think any one of us even the relegious people do that nowadays? In my openion, very a few people who do that..
In fact I saw someone and I hope every one change to be just like her..
      thank you
