She went to submit a report to Marwan. The first time since she started working, heard him shouting in the phone and was very angry. He hanged the phone violently and noticed Hana beside the door waiting him to finish. "Sorry Hana, come in please", he said with a very calm voice as if nothing happened few seconds ago. Marwan is known among his friends and colleagues that he never likes to reveal anything inside himself. Hana, the young new empolyee felt sorry about him. She felt that he was suffering deeply from inside. She doesn't know how she could get that courage and asked him with a tender soothing voice: "What is wrong Mr Marwan? I know that you are suffering and something is bothering you. He looked at her and for Hana’s surprise a drop of tear get out from his sad eyes.

“Are you sure you are Ok?” She asked him with a worried voice.
“Yes. I am Ok. I am just worried about my mother’s health. She is a little sick nowadays”. He answered to convince and calm the worried Hana.
“ I am really sorry about that. I hope that she will recover and I will pray for her”.
He smiled and said, “Thank you so much for your kind heart”.
“Ok. I will let you now to complete the rest of your work. I will see you tomorrow in sha allah*”. By God’s willing.

She left his office and let him again sinking in his depressed thoughts. He didn’t lie when he tell her about his mother’s illness. However, what was bothering him that his ill mother told him, “If you didn’t marry your cousin, forget that I am your mother”. That sentence was like a disaster to him because he didn’t want to get married to his cousin neither lose his dear mother. His only wish in this life was getting married to his truthful love Maram.

Maram was a beautiful cheerful girl with a very kind heart. Her smile let others forgot their sorrow and depression. She was the fruit of her house and she was very popular in her school because she was intelligent and very sociable. Marwan loved her since she was 17 years and he was 22 years. He was intending to marry her as soon as he provided the dowry. It was impossible for him to get married before providing the required dowry. He thought that he still had time to collect the dowry because Maram was still young and studying in school. So, he decided to ask her hand as soon as she finished her studies and she will be for him. However, he never thought that Maram might get married earlier and she would never knew about his love towards her. It was a shocking news when he knew from his sisters that Maram was engaged to her brother’s best friend. He couldn’t do anything because no body knew about his concealed feelings towards Maram. So, he decided to forget her and wish her happiness, but he couldn’t at all. How could he forget his soul and she was most of the time in front of him.

Maram was too happy. She still rememberd when she opened the door one day and saw Ahmed, her brother’s best friend. Ahmed was impressed by this little beautiful angel that opened the door for him. He was an English teacher and he came to Maram’s house to help her brother to take some English lessons. Maram was also too happy because her heart was dancing of joy and she was surprised and confused from that feeling. Ahmed couldn’t stop thinking about Maram and her picture haunted his mind. So, he decided that Maram is the suitable wife for him beside that he loved her from the first sight.

Marwan hated Ahmed and envied him because he was going to marry his love. He couldn’t forget Maram because her family house was beside his house. They were very close neighbors. Whenever he saw her, he suffered a lot because she can never be for him. But he never thought that the destiny might be beside him one day.

It was a dark night when the phone rang in Maram’s house at 11 pm. Maram’s father get quickly and he was afraid from this late call and wished that he is not going to hear any bad news because usually late calls bring the bad news. He answered the call and wished if he didn’t. He didn’t know how to transfer the bad news to Maram. Ahmed had a horrible accident and he was in hospital. He was insisting to see Maram at that moment despite his critical condition.

Maram was sleep at that moment and she was too happy and dreaming of her engagement party which was supposed to be in the next day. Maram’s parents felt sorry about their young daughter who is going to suffer after receiving this bad shocking news. Her mother woke her up tenderly and told her to go to the hospital. Maram couldn’t understand what her mother was trying to tell her. So, her mother called her father to come help her in convincing Maram. She couldn’t believe what she just heard from her parents and said: “My engagement party is tomorrow and Ahmed is fine. He talked to me before I go to bed and we talked about our wedding. Ahmed is fine believe me”. Maram was talking calmly without even a drop of tear. Her mother cried and hugged her daughter. Her father told her that she had to go to hospital because Ahmed is waiting her. Maram refused going to the hospital but her father promised her to be with her all the time.

In the cold cordials of the hospital and exactly in the Intensive Care Unit, Ahmed was inside with many wires in all his body. He was breathing by the help of the Oxygen. All his family was outside waiting the doctors to tell them about his condition. His mother was crying bitterly worried about her dear son. However, Ahmed was whispering difficultly and his voice could be hardly heard. He was Whispering Maram’s name many times. Maram arrived with her father to the waiting hall where all Ahmed’s family was waiting there. Maram started to get panic and she hold her father’s arm tightly. One of the nurses came quickly and asked about Maram because Ahmed was insisting to see her. Maram hesitated to go inside because she was afraid that she would find Ahmed inside. She was terrified that the truth was going to shock her. She begged her father to take her back to home. Her father tried to comfort and encourage her. Maram walked heavily to that room. The sound of heart beating machine terrified her.

Maram started crying when she saw the terrible condition of Ahmed, her sweetheart and her future husband. Ahmed saw Maram and with a hard voice told her to come close to him. Maram went close to his bed and couldn’t stop crying. Ahmed’s head was wrapped in white but the blood colored the white medical gauze to red. Ahmed hold Maram’s hand and told her to listen carefully to him. “ My dea…rest Ma..raa.m. Pl..s don’t cr..ay. I want you to promise me to achieve your dream and get high score to enter Sultan Qaboos University. Promise me”. Maram cried but Ahmed hold her hand tightly and whispered again. “Promise me”. Maram said with a crying voice, “I promised you but you are the one who will help me”. Ahmed was smiling and he closed his eyes. Suddenly, all the doctors and nurses get inside the room because of the sudden heart machine voice. Ahmed was still holding Maram’s hand, but his eyes were closed forever.

Since that dark day in the hospital. Maram’s life was getting worse day after day. The candle of her cheerful spirit died. Her performance in school was getting down and she was getting sick. Her young heart couldn’t bear the shock of losing her first love in front of her eyes. Even her closet sister Rana couldn’t be a big help to let her forget her grieves.

Because of her illness, Maram couldn’t achieve high marks to join Sultan Qaboos University. She was able to join the Technical college. However, she couldn’t bear staying there and she remembered her promise to Ahmed to achieve her dream. So, she decided to start again studying third secondary. She worked very hard despite her illness, but somehow she felt that Ahmed was with her supporting her. Her youngest sister Rana was also in third secondary and this was one of the reasons that helped Maram to study again. She was happy that her sister Rana supported her and studies together and there everyone in her family started to feel comfortable because their dear daughter started to go back to her lovely natural personality. There were also other happy eyes that kept following Maram whenever she went outside their house.

I didn’t want to reply until I read the full chapter

As with your other stories, this one is good...

But I have a little comment

I feel that you're taking the same line in all your stories. For example: a sweet innocent girl, who falls in love, and has an ideal caring family (to a cheesy extent sometimes)... and so forth

not that its not interesting, it is wallah, and I really like how you associate the scenarios with our Omani community, but there are other sides and issues and scenarios that you can make into a story and that would be different

Again, you are talented in writing no doubt in that, but you can just have a bit more variations to show your talent even more

Finally I get the reply of you dear :). I was wondering what happened to you or you are just not interested in reading. I think the comment that you devierted regarding the style of my stories is tottaly true and I wish if I could changes it. It seems that I am really affected by the style of my favorite classical writer Jan Austen because she usually has the same style in all her novels.
I promise you that I will try in future to change the style of my stories and let be in different areas instead of the same boring line #e .

I will try in this novel to focus in some critical issues that we face in our Omani society and I hope that I will be successful in presenting the perfect picture of each issue through the coming chapters.

Somehow, I feel that soemtimes my writing skills are getting down and unable to give the perfect description to my characters, plots, setting and so on. So, I need you all to help me through your comments and criticizing to improve my style of presenting the events and so on. Also, I want you to tell me about each chapter whether they are satisfying or not because I can go back and improve the chapter.

I know that I let you all down when I didn't continnue my previous story The End of Pride because that was out of my control and couldn't at all finish it. So, I beg you all to forgive me and to give me another chance through this new story.

It is weekend which means that I am going to have time to spend a time in finishing the second chapter. I hope that I will be able to finish it through the weekend and post it soon. But let me know about your frank comments and please don't try to let me feel good by saying it is GOOD. I need to hear the truth. |a

    • Chapter Two

They were studying together in their shared room for their final exams. Maram was getting bored and Rana noticed that. "What is bothering you?" asked Rana.
Maram: "Nothing. I just get bored of these books".
Rana threw the pillow in her face and laughed: "Come on. I know that you want to say something".
Maram: "OK. Do you want the truth Miss Rana. Actually I wish if I could kill that Mr observing eyes".
Rana giggled: "You mean the poor Marwan? Hay, he is very funny. I wonder why you hate him."
Maram: "Do you want to know why I hate him. Didn't you notice how he observed us whenever we get out from our house. I even started to hate getting out because of him. He pretended that he is fixing his car and park it close from our house in order to observe. And you are still asking why?”

Rana laughed and tried to tease her sister: "But don't you think that he is so romantic? At least he always asked us if we want anything from the cold stores".
Maram: "And you are so happy that there is somebody brought for you your favorite drink Ice Tea".
Rana: "At least he is generous. He is also very charming. Don't you think so?"
Maram woke up from her place and went towards Rana and quarreled with her by using the pillow. She was vexed from her teasing style. They started to play with pillows. Then they decided to organize their room before their mother get in and got a heart attack from watching the miserable situation of their room.

Maram and Rana were like a twin that can not be separated and their parents felt happy whenever they saw them together. These lovely angels always added the spirit of joy to their house. Rana was the spoiled girl to her father while Maram was closer to her mother because she was always with her whenever she was sick in hospital. Their father called them to come and sit beside him. Rana went quickly to sit beside her father. He laughed and said: "You will never change. You are no more a child darling"
Rana objected and said: "And you are no younger old man".
Her father laughed and beat her in her head: "Who is the old man?"
Rana: "I didn't say anything new. I heard mother calling you by this name".
Her mother gazed her eyes and shouted at her: "Come on here naughty girl. How could you say that I said that about your father?"
They all laughed and the mother was chasing Rana trying to beat her for her funny accusations towards her.

Maram felt happy that her parents were close from her. Her eldest brother Nasser was very tender and passionate but sometimes he got mad for trifle things. When he got mad nobody can talk to him because they knew how his reaction would be. Ali was the second boy and he was totally different from Hilal. Ali always had the obligation of responsibility towards his family because Hilal was working in Muscat. Besides, he is very close from Maram and Rana. Sultan was the youngest and he was very stubborn and enjoyed a lot to fight and quarrel with Rana. Whenever he got bored in the house, he will just started teasing Rana and Maram. He couldn't quarrel a lot with Maram because she had a very weak body not like Rana who had a good healthy body and she was strong. The beautiful features in Rana were her big black eyes which were like a black pearl. Her cheeks were prominent like opening roses in the early morning. Maram was also having beautiful cheeks like Rana’s but she lost much weight and her face was getting pale. Her eyes were honey-colored and there was an attracting sight in her eyes that let others want to know her more. But she has the most charming smile.

Days and weeks passed quickly and Maram was exhausting herself a lot in studying hard for her final exams. She was getting sick many times because she neglected her health in the account of her studies. Rana was helping her a lot and tried to be with her whenever she was sick. The words of Ahmed were echoing in Maram's head whenever she was getting tired of studying. Her promise to Ahmed was the only motivation for her to continue. The days of exam were in doors and both of the sisters like many other students were ready to rush into the conclusive battle that going to determine the future of each student.

      ************************************

He got into the room and woke up Rana violently. "Wake up Rana. You did it. You did it". Rana and Maram woke up together shocked. "What are you talking about?" Rana asked hastily with hoarse voice while Maram was still stunned and unable to say anything. She was just opening her eyes widely with a worried look.

"You succeeded and get a good grade" said Sultan.
"Swear to god Sultan. How did you know that? Who tell you about it? I'll kill you Sultan if you are lying". Rana said with a very nervous, mad voice.
"What about me Sultan?" She said with a trembling voice.
Sultan looked at her with slyness smile: "Didn't I tell you since the beginning that you shouldn't exhaust yourself and study again. If you listened to me and follow my instructions, you would be very happy by staying in the house without the headache of studying in the university".
"For god's sake, Sultan. Please tell me how much did I get?" She begged him to tell her and her tears started to fall from her pale face.

Rana also wanted to know how much exactly she got. She couldn't bear the way Sultan was humiliating them in order to tell them their grade. She went towards Sultan and she was totally vexed about him. Sultan saw the mad expression on her and he was afraid that she was going to quarrel with him violently. So, he moved from his place trying to escape from the door. Rana couldn't calm the burning fire inside herself till she threw her mad volcano in Sultan who deserved that.
"Hay. Calm down. You got 90 %". Said Sultan.
"I can't believe you", she paused and with a sad voice, "What about Maram?"
Sultan smiled and looked towards Maram who was just starring at him with a begging look to tell her about her grade. "Well. I don't know how did she make it and pass the exams. But, she got 94%". Sultan Said with a very excited tone.
"Swear to god that you are telling me the truth Sultan. I beg you Sultan. Please don't do that with me". She sobbed and couldn't continue talking. Sultan felt guilty that he let his sister suffered since he arrived. He knew that she suffered a lot to achieve her dream by re-studying again this year. He went towards her and said: "You shouldn't cry dear. You should sing and dance now because you got a better mark than your spoiled sister", he pointed towards Rana. "But I am so proud of my dear sisters. Both of you get a very great marks". He commented.
"I am going to miss both of you. With whom I am going to quarrel? Who will listen to my jokes? Who will watch a movie with me at night besides eating our favorite meal that Maram used to prepare it for us". Sultan Said.
Rana laughed and said proudly: "Finally you realized that I am the pearl of this house and…"
Sultan interrupted her: "Shut your big mouth. Nobody can say anything to you that you soon believe".
Three of them kept in laughing and deciding what next should Rana and Maram do whether joining one of Education colleges or Sultan Qaboos University. Then they went to tell the rest of the family about the happy news.

Three weeks later, it was the happiest news that Maram received since long time. She was still stunned, unable to believe that she was accepted in Sultan Qaboos University. She was accepted exactly in college of education, English major which was the same major of her late lover Ahmed. However, she felt a little disappointed that her dear sister Rana was not going to be with her. Rana was accepted in one of Education colleges which was very close from their home. It was too difficult for both of the sisters to be separated in different places. But they realized that it is something definite that they should carry on it.
Hilal and Ali surprised them by their fabulous gifts. They bought two mobiles for Rana and Maram, so they could not feel homesick by contacting each other through this modern technology that invades the whole world to make life easier.
"I want both of you to use this gift very well". Ali advised his two sisters.
"We'll never abuse it dear Ali. Thank you so much my dearest brothers for this marvelous gift. I still can't believe that I have a new mobile" Rana said excitedly.
"I am also so happy, unable to express my happiness. Please Ali show me how to use it. I want to try it." Maram said eagerly.
"Hay you noisy girls. Be patient and I will teach both of you everything about it later because I am starving now. So, I don't think that you want me to eat you or lose my temper".

Maram and Rana said together: "No. Please. We'll get the lunch quickly".
Then Maram said: "But call Sultan to come from the TV room while we prepare the lunch".
Ali nodded his head and he shouted strongly to call Sultan to come.

      ******************************

After a period of time, Maram's family made a big lunch party, invited all their relatives and neighbors to celebrate the success of their two daughters. At the same time, Marwan was thinking of a way to meet Maram. He wished if he could go directly to her and reveal his sincere feeling towards her. He knew all the happy news about Maram and her sister through his young sister Sarah. He prepared two elegant gifts each covered with refulgent wrap. There were two cards for each gift and he wrote inside it beautiful words about success. He wished if he could just send a special gift to Maram different from Rana's but he couldn't because he didn't want others to suspect about his love in public. He was afraid from revealing his love and afraid that Maram might hate him.
"Sarah", he called his sister and he was a little bit nervous. He was not sure how to tell his sister to take the two gifts. "When you will go to Maram's house?" he stammered.
"I'll go there after 12:30 when I finish praying", Sarah answered.
"Are you going to give Maram and Rana any gifts?" He asked.
"No. I totally forget that. What shall I do?" Sarah asked.
"Don't worry about that because I bought two gifts". He paused and handled Sarah two beautiful colored gift bags to Sarah. "Give each one of them a bag and I hope that they will like the gifts".
"That's great. Thank you so much dear brother. I am sure they are going to love it because you have a good taste in choosing gifts". Sarah said.
"One thing else". Marwan interrupted his sister, "Don't forget to transfer them my sincere greetings".
      "Don't worry about that".
Marwan felt comfortable after he gave the two gifts to his sister. He was eager to know Maram's reaction when she received his gift. "Will she suspect that I love her, or she is going to hate me for that?" Marwan was thinking about this question in his mind and he couldn't hear his sister when she shouted that his friend Saif was waiting him in the phone.
      "Marwaaaaaaaaaan" Sarah shouted.
"What?" Marwan said after he woke up from his pinky dreams. "Why are you shouting?"
"Saif is waiting you in the phone since long time" Sarah muttered.
      "Ok. I am coming".
He told Saif that he was going to meet him in the mosque and then later go to the dinner’s party because they also were invited.

Sarah arrived the house with her mother and her young two sisters. She asked about Maram and Rana. Then she went towards them where they were staying with a bunch of girls who were their cousins. They were laughing and enjoying their time. Sarah felt shy and didn't know how to give the gifts to the two sisters in front all of the girls. Rana noticed that Sarah was hesitated to get inside the hall. She went towards her to welcome her.
"Hi Sarah. How are you? Come on please. Don't be shy. Nobody strange inside. All the girls are our cousins and let me introduce you to all of them". Said Rana and hold Sarah's hand to get her inside to introduce her to their cousins. But Sarah stayed where she was and said with a whisper, "Wait please. I want you to give you these simple gifts to you and Maram from my family. My brother Marwan sent his congratulations to both of you and wished you all luck in your future."
"There was no need for that dear. Your presence among us is more than enough. But thank you very much for the gifts and please thank your kind brother for the gifts too."

Maram was observing her sister with Sarah and her focus was mostly in the beautiful colored bags that Rana took them from Sarah. Then she saw her sister disappearing from her sight and only Sarah was in front of her.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
      To be continued

What do you think the reaction of Maram when she knew about Marwan's gift?
