Lateral Thinking Contest

First of all, I would like to Welcome you all to this contest. The contest holding the name ‘Lateral Thinking’ indicates the sort of questions to be expected. This contest would last for a week, starting Today, Saturday the 12th of July. Two questions would be posted every day through out the week. The last deadline to accept any answers would be, the time when the next question is posted. Any answers, posted after that deadline would be disqualified

Once more I remind that these questions require lateral thinking and as such do not post your answers before giving the questions enough thought. Some of the questions could trick you into rushing the wrong answer. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you have a look at the following topic

A. Two of the nearest stars to earth are Sirius, 8.7 light years away, and Wolf, 7.7 light years away. Sirius is moving towards us at 8 km per second and Wolf is moving away at 13 km per second. When Wolf has travelled one light year, What will be the nearest star to the earth

B. An electric train is travelling north from Leeds to Newcastle, a journey of around 100 miles, at a speed of 75 miles an hour. The wind is blowing from the east at 40 miles an hour. In what direction will the smoke from the train be blown

all the members who have participated in the contest so far

As for Day 2 Questions, am sorry for having to delay them and as such delay the whole contest for one day. This was due to the maintainance work that took place in the Saha Last night. Anyway, there is a bright side to this! More members can still have a go at Day 1 Questions till the release of the new set of questions

There are some good answers, but i would still recommend that you give the questions enough thought before attempting to answer them. Good luck to you all in the comming questions

Here Are the Answers for the contest questions

Day 1

A.The sun – it will always be the closest star to the earth whatever the movements of the other stars

B. It wont – electric trains don’t produce smoke

Day 2

A. Four – it doesn’t matter how many times you do the sum, 2 x 2 will always equal Four

B. Three minutes – the pan is large enough to cook them all together

Day 3

A. The one bucket (A); 10 degrees Fahrenheit is below freezing, so the coin in bucket (B) will just sit on the ice

B. The first; three sacks of corn are heavier than four empty sacks

Day 4

A. It was a ground floor window

B. Turned off the tap

Day 5

A. Yes – it would be impossible to crack a concrete floor with an egg

B. The other end of the rope wasn’t attached to anything

Day 6
