Grammar or Vocabulary

hi all
regarding the importance of grammar and vocabulary, there are many people who think that grammar is more important than vocabulary and vise versa. once i asked an english expert about this topic and he asked me an interesting question. he said that "if u want to travel to a forigen country , which book will be more useful for u, A GRAMMAR BOOK or A DICTIONARY?" i answered a DICTIONARY.
what do u think?

it is ture that vocabulary is very important but also grammar
for example read these two sentence then discuss with me which is important grammar or vocabularyi

i bought a car
i have bought a car

or

the door is painted
the door is being painted

if u get the right meaning of the two sentences you will reach to a point that says both grammar and vocabulary are more than important

and i liked bothof your analysis

I guese that we can learn grammar in limited time
but vocabulary need to be learned all our life
we will use to learn vocabulary most of our time
and i think that vocabulary is very important
as it is the same situation to the grammar

Well this is a very interesting question! I actually find what you all wrote true to a certain extent. However, i would say that the conclusion reached by Al-Baron, is totaly true. Both Grammer and Vocabulary are very important, and i really find it hard to distinguish which is more important. You need to have a good amount of vocabulary to speak english but you need grammer to put the words together correctly! So, actually both of them go together and can't be separated
