The 1st International Medical & Educational Conference & Exhibition for Parents

The Family Support group for the Disabled Children (FSGDC); in the Association of Early Intervention; is organizing the First International Medical and Educational Conference and Exhibition for Parents. The theme of the conference is “Neurological illnesses & Disorders: A Comprehensive Approach towards Treating the Disabled Children’s Needs”. It is scheduled to take place on 13th- 15th of March, 2011 in Al Faham Hall in the Cultural Center at Sultan Qaboos University, in Muscat in Oman.

The FSGDC, which was established in January 2010, consists of a group of parents devoted to serve other parents and their disabled children. As parents of disabled children, they are aware of the stressful situations and difficulties parents of disabled children go through and their concerns about their children’s development. However, these concerns are not valued by many professionals and physicians although current research has revealed that parents are usually correct in their concerns which should lead to additional investigation by the primary care paediatrician, a child neurologist, a developmental paediatrician or other qualified specialist, or preferably, a team of specialists. However, the medical treatment provided to children; in Oman and many parts of the world, pays attention to one aspect of the illness and neglects the others.

Therefore, the forthcoming conference will help to increase public awareness especially parents with regards to their children disabilities and will provide information and insight to parents, educators, professionals and physicians in order to treat children as a whole and to consider their educational, psychological ,emotional, medical, developmental and social needs. Moreover, professionals will listen to the parents’ views and will receive feedback from them about their experiences. In addition, the conference will be an opportunity in which greater emotional, psychological and social support can be offered to parents to help them cope with complex realities.
