    • House of Wonders

Built in 1883 on the site of Zanzibar Queen Fatuma's residence. This was the first building in Zanzibar to have electric lights and the first in East Africa to have an elevator. It was damaged in 1896 during the Shortest War in History (only lasting 40 minutes). It was later used by the British as their local offices until the revolution in 1964. It contains some of Pres. Karume's old cars, but not much has been done with it since 1977. Recent attempts have been made to have it renovated, and a craft market is housed on the veranda during the day

    • Beit el-Ajaib
also referred to as the House of Wonders

The House of Wonders didn't present such a stately appearance when first built, it looked perhaps a bit squat in those days

However damage done to the building during the 1896 war required extensive repairs and since the clock tower in the light house in front of the Palace had also been destroyed in the war, it was decided to combine projects and incorporate a new clock tower into the Palace renovations

The result was a truly remarkable building which is now more than 100 years old

    • The House of Wonders is a very large square-shaped building, with several stories, surrounded by tiers of pillars and balconies, and topped by a large clock tower. It was built in 1883 as a ceremonial palace for Sultan Barghash and was the first in Zanzibar to have electric light and an electric lift. Not surprisingly, when it was built, the local people called it Beit el Ajaib, meaning the House of Wonders. Today, it is still one of the largest buildings in Zanzibar, and there are plans to open it as the National Museum

    • I wish I knew about this two days ago, when I was at home, I had just what you asked for...
Yes, everybody, every one should go and visit Zanzibar. Although I don't speak Swahili and I don't have Swahili blood in me, one day and too the initiative to go and see our Empreor. You would love that place and specially meeting Omani People...They are unbelievable and you won't imagine how friendly they are.Actually, I got inivited to stay with an Omani family there just to see how they actually live their life and how it is different from Omani families here in Oman..There's no difference at all, except some traditions related to the Lnguage it self. But most of them kept the Omani culture and tradition. When you walk between those narrow street in Stone Town (it's the center of Zanzibar and it's like the capital), you would not feel you are in an african country at lady. You feel like you are walking in a village in Nizwa.
Few miles from Stone Town, you will start saying the House of Wonders. It's really beautiful, the design the decoration, the golden paints, the carpenteries and so many things that make it so wonderful. But unfortunnatley, it has been stoles so many times during the Civil Wars that happened there..
I remember that I almost cried when I saw it first and I immediately felt like needing to go back to Oman..Where is that Strong Emror we once knew...Gone with the wind...The Daughter, there is a very old fort right next to the House of Wonders and it' was also built by Omanis...
What is amazing in house of wonders, is that it still keeps the style of living of the Sultans and Queens...
On it's walls you can see some old pics of the Sultan and the Royal Family...You could see a documentations of the Omani imigration to Zanzibar....

I don't want to talk more than this.....
Go and visit it...as a matter of fact, if anybody want to go there, please contact me we will go together, but I'm not paying a Pizza...okay ???

Have fun all and excuse the language...
