Muscat: Two Omani students have been arrested in Pune in India for allegedly paying cash to increase their examination marks, according to a news report. Both are suspected to be involved in a racket to increase marks by paying money in the examination at the University of Pune. They were staying on rent in Kondhwa, the report added. The Omani nationals, along with five other suspects, including senior university staff, were remanded to police custody until Tuesday for further investigation.
Of the 21 students suspected to have got their marks increased, 20 are foreign students, the Indian media quoted local police in Pune as saying. The University of Pune is one of the favourite destinations for Omani students going to India to pursue higher education.
'Handsome' amount
According to the police, the reason for selecting foreign students was the 'handsome' amount of money they used to pay. "Also, there were less chances of raising questions over their changes in marks as their certificate would not be seen by any Indian student," another
report added.
The investigating officer and assistant police inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi of Chatuhshrungi police station said, "In our previous interrogations of arrested suspects, we came to know that many more foreign national students have indulged in such activities. They used to approach Indian nationals Gaus Shaikh and Salim Majid Shaikh to take their help in order to clear their subjects.
"After that, the duo used to take their details such as seat numbers, names and subject codes. Later, they would pass these details to the officials of the examination department," he added. The police investigators believe that students from Iran, Iraq and Oman have not been attending classes regularly in the colleges.
"After coming to know about the involvement of foreign nationals in the scam, we went through some of the records and came to know that there are some students who haven't been clearing a single academic year for three years. Those students used to take help of Guas and Salim," an investigator added.
Bolkotgi further said, "There is a possibility that more students have got such kind of benefits in the past as well."
