      assalaam u alaikum,
      final exam of the semester is on his way and im really worry about my grades....im always good in class,in participation but at the end my grades are always end up with c+'s and Ds....
      i can never think of anything esle but grades grades and nothing...if one asks me....if you are to choose two teacher..with one you learn alot but u may finish up with a(C).and the other gives you a very good grade but you finish your semester without learning anything...who do you prefer???i would choose the latter because what is important is grades not learning.If you have an elective course and there are a course which is rich of information and you can get occeans of information which will help you for the futue but there is no guarantee that u will finish up with an (A).and there is another course about which you know everything and you will get nothing new from it but you can get (A)easily.which course will you choose.the answer is the one which gives me(A).
      This is the case with most of the students...so the debate today is grading system. is it a good system?wont it stop many students learn important things?is all the students take the grade the suit them or it just comes by chance?cant a teacher grad a student without giving a final exam?will the grade of final exam is what determine wether a student is an(A)or(B),etc .what if an (A) had a bad day in final exam.
      these are the question which one can raise when talking about grades....
      are you for or against grading system and Why?is it better for a teacher to grade a student by observing his capabilites works during class time or he should decide it by giving a final exam?

      i personally against the grading system and i think grades cannot determine wether a student is good or bad.there are many students who do not have good GPA's when they graduate but they are far better than those who had better GPA's.It is for number of reasons.there are teachers who are very strict and give grades according to students hard works and never deal with objectivity and there are other who only deal with emotions and give grades to students who really do not deserve it.here in my universities most of the student avoid taking course with teachers who teach will and give grade according to student's work and capabilities.they preffer to take courses with teachers who are careless but give good grades at end of the semester. i always find sections of the teachers who give grades easily are always full and viceversa.Also student take elective courses that are most easy and they know everything about them.they just take them for the sake of grades.
      so,im against this way of grading systems...and also i think a teacher should grade a student according his hard work because there are students who born intelligent with gene and they take a's without putting lots of efforts and there are others who work a lot but they cannot take good grades.these students need support and good teachers who can motivate them to their development.
      thats all i can say for now and im looking for your views.

      You are saying "my university" and I am afraid we do not know what uni you mean
      I believe we should talk about a certain case or educational system

      I am afraid we cannot talk about this topic if we mean British System and Qatari one for example

      Yes , we have to worry about grades ,BUT we have to remember how we can get the high grade

      we have to remember that our effort will not go without benefits if we get low grade,as you say that

      many people get low grades in universeity, yet they are proficient in their work
      because ALLah doesn't waste people's Good EFFORT

    • hmmm i was talking generally about grading system i study in SQU
      i know it is adopted worldwide but in these days we are more concerned about our grades than to learn something. we take courses in which we can get a. no matter we get benefit from it or not.
      the question is does grades prove a student is good or bad?
      and also please tenderness why if educational system is british or qatar we cannot discuss it....i dont get the idea.

      Simple, very very simple
      Educational system is different. We learn, NO, we do not learn, OK we learn to have a piece of paper proving that we have learnt and get a job
      Our teachers and lecturers think they are different and think they did miracles to become a lecturer or M.Sc or PhD holder and come to revenge or avenge rather
      I wonder why ~!@q , and if we get a A then they think that their topic that they are teaching is simple or people would think so and/or he/she is making it easy for us, so we need to get a C or a D at the most
      grades never reflect how good you are, it is what comes after graduation that counts. This applies where you find who really cares, but not us

      our unis are much better and harder than those in the west, do you know why? well, because we should come out knowing a lot otherwise we will not ever learn a new thing while in the west they belueve that the student start gaining knowledge after graduation. We finish and sit doing nothing, they do and go into industry and real work so they have not much concentration on As as we do

      So, do not bother whether it is A or a D, as long as you get the knowledge you need to start with after done with this funny system
      Just go there and enjoy yourself, have fun, try to pass doing they want you to do of all the crab
      It is a C or a D after all

    • hey guys, would you allow me to say my word on this...

      I know the grading system in SQU quite well as I have studied there myself in some point of time...
      It's not the grading system that matters, it how we use these grades into our advantage...
      Doctors always round the figures to a higher or a lower number and which gives them the power over the student...There are so many students who go and beg for grades and SQU is full of them...For example, if you got 85 out of 100, he could give you a B or B- or C++ depond on the doctor percpective and his/her mood that day...
      if we were using the old fasioned one then 85 will remain 85 until your last semester....

      The problem is that we can't fly in a different direction from the whole world...The whole world is using ABCD

      Didin't I tell you ~!@@ad . We are still far behind the Grading System and the Higher Education

      I wonder when our intellectuals will be in the MOOD so we can have a descent EDUCATIONAL STSTEM

    • I think we need at least 40-60 years ahead to catch up with what they call themselves with First World Education System...

      Do you get to pick your major here, not for sure...Do you get to choose your classes and Intersets, not for sure>>

      Do you get to choose you Docs and Profs, not for sure...and if yes, it would be with 100 rules and regulations....

      Open Minded People....That's all what we need....
      Open and Media That's all what our governments need

      sorry i dont have much time to write a lot cuase i have a final exm for litrature 2morrow

      i think in these days it is only grades that count and people who are incharge of us also graduated with this belief and appreciate only those who have good grades.
      and what i believe here is that we are PROGRAMMED with this belief which is only care for your grade no matter you learn or no.

      Although I do believe of what you have said, I also believe that students should get their real grades.
      Once they discover that their doctors do not give them their merit , this will have negative effect on their hardwork later on
      I am studying English L & Literature, and I saw doctors who prefer some srudents than others not because of their high level , but ...........i
      fair grading can give power to students to go on with their studying, and encourage them to study well
      without worrying about their grades.
      And once we remember we are studying to contibute to our country, our world to have better life for next generations, grades and marks would not stand as a rock on our way.
