Hibernating bears' wounds heal without scars

Medical researchers and zoologists
worked together to find that
the bears' wounds
healed with almost no scarring
and were infection-free.

The scientists hope, eventually,
to find out exactly how the bears' bodies heal
while their body temperature
heart rate and metabolism are reduced.
This could aid studies of human wound-healing

An 8-year-old Utah boymade sure he and his 5-year-old sister
buckled up before heading out on a middle-of-the-night
drive in their mother's minivan,
but they didn't get far.

The boy, who couldn't even see above the steering wheel,
made it just a few hundred feet before crashing the vehicle
into a line of trees along the Ogden River,
about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City.

No one was injured
and the children were returned to a stunned mother
who awoke to police officers in her apartment at about 2 a.m.

New World's Shortest Man Is Just 21.5 Inches 'Tall'

I'm always proud to see short men show off their pride
like the very robust competition for World's Shortest Man
which just got a new champ in the form of
a 72-year-old Nepalese man

Guinness World Records has confirmed that
Chandra Bahadur Dangi stands at just 21.5 inches (54.6 centimeters) tall
giving him the title in a ceremony over the weekend.

Skydiver Felix Baumgartner on track for super jump

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner is well on the way
to setting a world record for the highest free-fall jump.

On Thursday,
the adventurer leapt from a balloon-borne capsule
71,500ft (22km) above New Mexico,
landing safely eight minutes later.

The dive was intended to test all his equipment
before he tries to free-fall from 120,000ft later this year.

In doing so,
he would better the mark of 102,800ft
set by US Air Force Colonel Joe Kittinger in 1960.

Even just Thursday's jump puts Baumgartner in a select group
as only Kittinger and Russian Eugene Andreev
have descended from higher.

Baumgartner,
who is famous for stunts such as jumping off the Petronas Towers,
is seen in the special pressure suit
he must wear to stay alive in the thin air and extreme cold of the stratosphere.

His Red Bull Stratos team estimates he reached 364mph (586km/h)
during the descent,
and was in free fall for three minutes and 43 seconds
before opening his parachute.

From capsule to ground,
the entire jump lasted eight minutes
and eight seconds.

The 42-year-old was quoted afterwards
as saying that the cold was hard to handle.

"I could hardly move my hands. We're going to have to do some work on that aspect," he said.

The Austrian also said the extraordinary dimensions
of the high atmosphere took some getting used to:

"I wanted to open the parachute after descending for a while
but I noticed that I was still at an altitude of 50,000ft."

Man with widest mouth in the world enters record books

Measuring over six and a half inches across, Francisco Domingo Joaquim officially has the widest mouth in the world.

The 20-year-old from Sambizanga in Angola has the unusual ability to fit an entire 330ml can of soda in his mouth, sideways.

Joaquim, also known as "Chiquinho", recently appeared on an Italian TV show where he amazed crowds by placing and removing a can of coke from his mouth 14 times in under a minute.

After finding out that he would feature in the Book of Guinness World Records 2011, Chiquinho said that it was "a dream come true."

An inventive French artist designed this properlyfunctioning yachtto look as if it is just about to take a one-way trip to Davy Jones' locker,and he created a good enough illusion to have garnered literally hundreds ofoffers for assistance from good samaritans while motoring her around. Accordingto her creator, Julien Berthier, this unusual boat represents "thepermanent and mobile image of a wrecked ship that has become a functional and safe leisure object." OK, we might have tried to pare that down a little, butthe artist is entitled to describe his own work.

So, how do you make a "functional and safe leisure object" such as this? After cutting the aptly double-named 21 foot boat Love Love in two, artist/yacht designer Berthier added a new keeland motor, allowing the vessel to safely travel on the water while appearing tobe in a sinking position. In fact, he did such a good job in making a stablecraft, he was able to quite easily prove the sea-worthiness of his boat in a famously challenging waterway.

Berthier successfully motored the Love Love across the English Channel to prove her seaworthiness,and of course he received many, many offers of assistance along the way -reportedly hundreds. Perhaps that's the real story here: Not the creative andeye-catching piece of trickster art and engineering, but how mariners willalmost universally rush to the aid of strangers in need - that"brotherhood of the sea" which compels us to look out for one another like family.

Of course, family or not, after all the false alarms this design has raised, if Love Love (or should it be Crier au Loup?) ever starts sinking for real, we'll assume her skipper doesn't expect a rapid response.

An Australian woman has dislocated her neck - by sneezing

Monique Jeffrey (28)
dislocated two vertebrae in her neck two weeks ago
after sneezing while sitting up in bed.

"I just knew something was wrong.
I felt something move and I was in excruciating pain," she said.

Monique, mother to 10-month-old son Tom,
was left unable to move.

Thankfully, however,
she had her phone in her hand
and was able to painstakingly type out a cry for help to husband Sam.

She was taken to hospital
but was told she simply had a stiff neck caused by a muscle spasm
and was given exercises to loosen it.

But things turned serious several hours later
when Monique's left arm developed numbness and tingling.

She was immediately told to stop moving
and was rushed to a spinal trauma unit
where it was discovered that her top two vertebrae had dislocated.

Arkadi Kim’s coffee bean mosaic was acknowledged by Russia’s Book of Records, beating the previous title holder by about 5 square meters. It was created in December 2011, in Armenia, and weighed “only” 140 kilograms. The artist behind the former largest coffee bean mosaic was non other than world-renown artist Saimir Strati.

Measuring nearly 30 square meters, The Awakening mosaic recently unveiled in Gorky Park, Moscow, set a new world record for the largest coffee bean mosaic. It’s not very often that you get to see artworks as impressive as the one created by Russian artist Arkadi Kim. He and his team spent around two weeks working on the impressive mosaic, weighing the coffee beans, roasting them to achieve the desired color tones and placing them at just the right spot on the giant panel set up in Gorky Park. Believe it or not, this unique piece of art is made of 1 million coffee beans, weighing an impressive 180 kg (397 pounds). Entitled “The Awakening”, it shows the detailed visage of a girl and alluring coffee aroma making its way to her nose

The beautiful coffee bean artwork will remain in Gorky park until July 1st, when it will be dismantled and the beans sold to a processing plant. To create a proper atmosphere, local authorities have also set up a cozy cafe and coffee tasting area for visitors.
