      "الوطن" صحيفة يومية سياسية تصدر كل أيام الاسبوع دون توقف وهي ذات ملكية فردية.. صاحب الامتياز المدير العام ورئيس التحرير الاستاذ / محمد بن سليمان بن محمد الطائي صدر العدد الاول من "الوطن" في 28 يناير 1971 معلنة بذلك ميلاد الصحافة العُمانية حاملة شعار صوت عُمان في الوطن العربي ، و"الوطن" هي الصحيفة الوحيدة التي عاصرت مسيرة النهضة المباركة بقيادة حضرة صاحب الجلالة السلطان قابوس بن سعيد المعظم .
      وعبر مسيرة "الوطن" الصحفية الطويلة كانت تطبع في أكثر من عاصمة عربية وذلك في البدايات الاولى للنهضة المباركة ، فقد كانت تطبع في السبعينيات في بيروت وعند بداية الحرب الاهلية اللبنانية انتقلت طباعتها الى القاهرة ومنها الى الكويت ثم انتقلت طباعتها الى المطابع بالسلطنة ، ثم أنشأت "الوطن" مطابعها الخاصة عام 1988 .
      استطاعت "الوطن" أن تلبي رغبات المواطن العُماني أينما وجد وذلك من خلال تقديم خدمة صحفية أمينة ومخلصة بالقدر الذي تحولت فيه الى صحيفة الشارع العُماني ، وذلك لم يتأت من فراغ إذ ان "الوطن" ومن خلال توجهاتها الرامية الى تلبية رغبات قرائها الاعزاء وجدت التجاوب والقبول من القراء وانعكس ذلك في تنامي معدلات التوزيع باطراد حتى بلغت المستوى المتقدم الذي وصلت اليه الآن .
      اختطت "الوطن" خطا خاصا بها من خلال توجهها لجمهور القراء وفي المقابل وجد فيها العُماني ضالته المنشودة فخصها بكل اهتمامه ، كما ان "الوطن" كانت ولاتزال من الصحف السباقة الى رعاية الحركة الفنية العُمانية وذلك بتخصيصها لمساحات كبيرة لتغطية الانشطة الفنية والدرامية بالسلطنة ، كما اهتمت منذ بدايات النهضة المباركة بالحركة الرياضية العُمانية وقامت برعايتها والاسهام في نهضتها وهي الآن المرجع الوحيد والتاريخي لهذا الزخم المتنامى ، وقد قام عدد من الاكاديميين باعداد رسالات ماجستير ودكتوراه عن أوجه الحياة العُمانية من خلال الارتكاز على اعداد "الوطن" عبر تاريخها الطويل هذا فضلا عن الخدمات الاعلانية والاجتماعية التي تقدمها للجمهور .
      وأنشأت "الوطن" مبنى خاصا بها يعد من أحدث الدور التي انشئت خصيصا لتكون مقرا لصحيفة لا في السلطنة فحسب بل في منطقة الشرق الاوسط قاطبة ، والمبنى الحديث يستطيع تلبية كل امكانات التطور والارتقاء عبر السنين ، والآن هناك ادارات متعددة يشتمل عليها مبنى "الوطن" في منطقة العذيبة التابعة لولاية بوشر بمحافظة مسقط منها على سبيل المثال : قسم المعلومات الصحفية ـ سكرتارية التحرير ـ قسم الترجمة الصحفية ـ قسم الاخبار ـ الشئون المالية ـ الشئون الادارية ـ قسم التحقيقات الصحفية ـ القسم السياسي ـ قسم الدسك المركزي ـ القسم الثقافي والفني ـ قسم الولايات ـ قسم المرأة والطفل ـ القسم الاقتصادي ـ قسم المنوعات ـ ادارة التحرير ـ المطبعة.
      تطبع "الوطن" في مطابعها الخاصة بها التي تعد من أحدث المطابع المتوفرة عالميا ، ويبلغ عدد العاملين بـ "الوطن" 195 عاملا ، كما ان "الوطن" تسير بخطى حثيثة وجادة في عملية تعمين الوظائف في كافة الاقسام حيث تبلغ نسبة التعمين الآن مانسبته 47% من مجموع عدد العاملين .
      ومتابعة لهاجس التطوير والارتقاء الذي تسير عليه "الوطن" تلبية لرغبات القراء فانها تستعين بالكتاب من داخل البلاد وخارجها فضلا عن مراسليها المعينين بموجب عقود سنوية في عدد من العواصم العربية والاجنبية والذين يوافون مقر الجريدة بمسقط برسائل صحفية وتحقيقات وتحليلات على نحو يومي وعلى مدار الساعة من العواصم التي يتواجدون فيها ومن مكان وقوع الحدث مباشرة .
      حرصت (الوطن) وتحرص دائما على اكتشاف إبداعات الاقلام العُمانية ومد يد العون لهم لتقديم الجديد والمفيد دائما خدمة للاعلام العُماني وفتح الطريق امامه ليعبروا دوما الى آفاق ارحب لاطلاع القراء كل صباح على افكارهم وارائهم التي تسهم في خدمة الوطن.
      تعتمد "الوطن" على الاعلانات كمصدر هام وحيوي من مصادر الدخل وقد وجد فيها المعلن طريقه الى المستهلك وذلك من خلال استفادتهم من خبرات "الوطن" الطويلة ومن عراقتها في الساحة العُمانية وعبر التصاقها الكلي والاكيد بكافة قطاعات المجتمع ومن خلال نسب التوزيع المرتفعة التي تسجلها يوميا حيث يصعب العثور على أي نسخ منها في الاسواق في أوقات النهار ، وذلك ما رصدته دراسات مستقلة قامت بها احدى المؤسسات الاجنبية ، وقد اكدت هذه الدراسات ان "الوطن" هي الصحيفة الاولى في السلطنة من خلال نسبة التوزيع التي تسجلها يوميا ومن خلال الاجابات التي تم الحصول عليها من العينات المختلفة والذين اجمعوا على ان "الوطن" هي صحيفتهم الاولى .
      اعدت شركات مستقلة دراسات عن التوزيع وتأثير ذلك على القراء وخلصت نتائج تلك الدراسات الى ان "الوطن" هي الصحيفة الاكثر شعبية وشهرة في سلطنة عُمان ، حيث اشارت الى ان "الوطن" هي الاعلى من حيث عدد القراء في جميع الاعمار والاعلى في عدد القراء بالنسبة لفئة الدخل الشهري والسنوي وانها الاعلى في عدد القراء الذكور والاناث بين المواطنين العُمانيين وفي عدد القراء للاعمار مابين 16 ـ 24 سنة ، كما أظهرت الدراسة ان "الوطن" تتفوق على جميع الصحف العربية وغير العربية في السلطنة في معدلات قرائها في جميع المراحل السنية.
      بتاريخ 18 يونيو 1996 وفي خطوة جسورة لبست "الوطن" ثوبا جديدا مواكبة بذلك التغيير الذي تنهجه الصحف العالمية ، فسبقت جميع الصحف العُمانية والكثير من الصحف العربية بتغيير حجم الورق من ناحية العرض وأدخلت الشراع العُماني شعارا لها لتجسد بصدق انها أول من أبحرت بالكلمة العُمانية .. وتخليدا لذكرى الشراع الذي يمثل قيمة خاصة في نفوس العُمانيين .

      وفي تاريخ 28/01/2001 يوم ميلاد الوطن الـ 30 قامت الوطن باضافة زخم تطويري جديد بهذه المناسبة، تمثل في زيادة عدد صفحات الجريدة واضافة ابواب جديدة متخصصة وايضا المزيد من الالوان للصفحات الداخلية، كما تم تكثيف الجرعة الثقافية والمحلية نزولا عند رغبة قارئنا الكريم داخل السلطنة وخارجها.
      ولا تتوقف عجلة التقدم وعجلة التطوير التي تنشدها (الوطن) دائما .. وهي بذلك كانت ولا تزال الصحيفة الاكثر قبولا بين فئات القراء.
