On the first day with the new consultant and registrar, as usual I was the first to arrive so I started to collect the patients files and organise them in the trolley. I was told that Dr B will be my new consultant and Dr C will be the new registrar. As soon as they arrived, I went and introduced myself. Dr B and Dr C were too busy with patients list to the extent that they didn’t notice me and my other colleagues introducing ourselves.

They started the ward round and we followed them. There were not sure about one of the patients, I said “ I admitted this patient.” The registrar looked at me and said “I have the file we don’t have time to listen to a fourth year presentation! “ $$a

I stood back in surprise and told myself to give them excuses “ it’s their first day back, lots of patients on the list !fourth year makes the ward round longer ! “ .:d

On the next day Dr B was not there so Dr C did the ward round. I and my colleagues spent two hours following her from one patient to another. We didn’t feel that we are part of the team or involved in the patients care. There was no interaction of what so ever between us unless she wanted the drug or the observation charts! $$c

She avoided eye contact with me and student M all the time. When she talked she looked at student L or to the distance. I found that very strange and started to ask myself what’s wrong? Why she is behaving in this manner ? have I done something wrong or annoying?

Throughout the days of the attachment , Dr C continued to ignore and avoid me and student M. During ward rounds she didn’t talk or look at us and she was keen to teach student L only! When we had questions she was annoyed to answer because she was too busy but it was ok if student L had something to discuss.

When our team was on call I was sent back to the ward and asked me not to stay in ED with her! One day I was leaning on the nurses’ station desk to check on blood results , she asked me to get out of the way in a very rude manner. I was embarrassed in front of others who were in shock and couldn’t find a reason for this kind of attitude. I became tearful and student L came and tried to calm me down. :(:(

Another day Dr B assigned Dr C to give us a tutorial upon my request because I didn’t have the courage to ask her myself. She started to throw difficult questions and asked me to answer but I couldn’t. She was very sarcastic in her response and made feel that I’m stupid and useless.

As the first week passed I started to feel miserable, useless and unwanted in this place. My performance had been deteriorating and I was no longer keen to attend ward rounds because all I do was standing there like a piece of furniture. I and student M were unable to communicate with Dr C and felt that she was not approachable. I used to woke up every morning not feel like going to the hospital. I lost confidence in my abilities and began to wonder what I’m doing here ! I could’ve joined med school back home where I wouldn’t be discriminated or treated this way!!!$$c:(

I remember calling my parents in a very depressed mood, discussing withdraw of course. I talked to my senior colleagues whom had similar experiences. They tried to convince me that sometimes in hospital environment I will have to work with people who have this kind of attitude. $$a:d

I talked to a couple of staff about this issue because I was quite worried that it will have an impact on my evaluation. They were very supportive and reassured me. In the following weeks I tried my best to ignore her negative attitude towards me and normalise things. It was very hard but I realised that my ambition worth fighting and I won’t allow anyone to destroy it.

The following week I had my exam and I got brilliant result !

These are few illustrations of what kind of fluctuating situations medical students are facing on regular basis:d . I found that minimal positive words from a senior staff has great effect on our performance. I’m very thankful for those who encourage us;). On the other hand, I feel sorry for those who don’t hesitate to put students down and treat them in a harsh way$$c.

I was thinking that if one day I became famous Dr C wouldn’t be able to point at me and say this was my student !:(

in the medical school it is the drs who elevate u and depress u
after u become a dr

it is the administration who u fight

people think it is the pateints that are problematic - but they dont know it is the law placed by the administration which makes the pateints feel bad and complain agianst drs

well ...

this is a big topic ...
