Reading difficulties

* Reading difficulties occur in many areas
(1) Decoding
(2) Comprehension
(3) Retention
(1) Decoding difficulties :
Decoding is the process by which a word is broken into individual phonemes.
* Students have decoding difficulty because :
- They read without expression and they ignore punctuation while reading.
- They use wrong way to read by reading word by word.
- They confuse between letters and sounds they represent.
- Some students sound out words incorrectly and they

2) – Comprehension difficulties
Comprehension depends on mastery of decoding so students who have
problems with decoding they will also have problems to understand
what he has been read.

Students have many reasons for comprehension difficulties for example:
they don’t concentrate during reading.
They confuse the meaning of words and sentences so they cannot
connect information together to get the main ideas of the text.

So if the reader want to understand the text he should have

Finding the main idea using scanning
The reader will understand more if he/she predicts the meaning of words.
Surprisingly , I found from the questionnaire which I did
that only 4% of the students always can easily guess the meaning of the English words.

(3) Retention difficulties :
Students have retention difficulties because they have
problems in remembering or summarizing what has been read. .
