Super-tanker in collision off Singapore
Oman s ship
A Malta-registered super-tanker collided with a container ship in the Strait of Singapore, causing an oil spill near the world’s second busiest container port. (Oman Shipping’s 320,000-dwt Seeb) (built 2011) clashed with the Kota Tenaga (built 2002) near Pulau Sebarok yesterday. About five metric tons of marine fuel oil leaked from the Kota Tenaga, a Singapore-flagged vessel, after it made contact with the SEEB, considered to be a very large crude carrier, around 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) South of Pulau Sebarok island, the Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement. Seeb joins Oman Shipping fleet
Sun, 17 July 2011
OKPO, South Korea — Oman Shipping Company (OSC) celebrated at Okpo city in South Korea the launch of a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), Seeb, which will be the 28th carrier operated by OSC. The ceremony was held at Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company (DSMEC), the manufacturing company, in the presence of officials from both the companies.
Seeb is designed and constructed according to the latest international standards and is the first vessel of her type from DSMEC to incorporate advanced ballast water treatment technology to comply with international conventions on the protection of the environment from the effects of transportation of ballast water and sediments around the world.
The vessel, which has a 317,000 deadweight tonne (DWT) capacity, is 133 metres length overall, 60 metres in beam and a design draft of 21 metres. Seeb is the OSC’s ninth VLCC to join service. OSC has now a fleet of 28 vessels and an order book of 13 vessels to be delivered between now and 2012. The DWT capacity of the current fleet is around 3.9 million DWT, increasing to around 8 million DWT once the order book is delivered.
It is worth mentioning that OSC is a closed joint stock company, incorporated in 2003 and owned by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman. The aim of the incorporation of the company is to ensure added value to the state revenues through marine shipping especially the revenues of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG). It also aims at providing Omanis with promising job opportunities in new fields.
Since the start of commercial operations, the company has prepared plans and programmes to train Omanis. The company has also played a great role in raising awareness and promoting marine shipping industry in the Sultanate by providing training opportunities on its ships for graduates of the International Maritime College Oman (IMCO).
Since its inception, OSC annually offers 10 to 20 scholarships for high school graduates. Those who are successfully selected will undergo a three-year training programme in a professional maritime college including one-year sea training on board. Once they graduate and are certified, they are offered a job on board as a qualified seafarer.
OSC has up to now sponsored a total of 81 cadets for specialised maritime studies leading to a Certificate of Competence in either Deck or Engineering. The first 4 batches between 2003 and 2006 were sent to South Tyneside College in the United Kingdom (UK), a Marine College that is world renowned for its quality of maritime training.
Between 2007 and 2010, the company sponsored cadets at the International Maritime College Oman (IMCO), which is the first maritime college in the Sultanate offering diploma and degree programmes in the maritime industry. Around 35 cadets from the first 5 batches have already graduated, obtained the Certificate of Competence and joined the company’s vessels as seagoing officers. OSC expects to see its first Omani Captain and Chief Engineer around 2017.
More than 50 cadets have completed or still doing their sea training on board until now. Part of the cadets training programme is to spend 6 to 12 months on board a vessal to have hands-on experience. OSC in association with the Manpower Ministry and IMCO has begun to recruit, train and develop Omanis to become qualified and experienced ratings. 28 ratings have been selected with 18 of them (non-deck) completing their pre-sea training at IMCO and joining their vessels in January 2011 as trainees.
The remaining 10 (deck ratings) were sent to a maritime training academy in India. They are expected to join the vessels in August 2011. Once they get the right experience and competence for the job, they will be replacing expatriate seafarers. The merchant fleets comprises many types of vessels, which include passenger vessels, oil, gas and petrochemical product tankers, bulk carriers, container vessels, reefer vessels and other types of specialised ships.
Departments in merchant ships are broadly classified into three main areas namely the deck department, the engine department and the service department, offering career opportunities as either an officer or rating.
Marine transport industry requires availing job opportunities like chipping, painting, greasing, repairs to the ship’s hull, superstructure and routine maintenance is done by Deck ratings, known as a Seaman, who also operate deck machinery like cranes and derricks, and also perform watch-keeping duties as sea, such as lookout and helmsman, as well as jobs of maintenance for main engines, generators, boilers, pumps and others, which are to be done by engine room ratings. At sea, they keep a record and monitor the running of machinery and assist the Engineer Officer on duty. — ONA
