To get hold of translation one needs to have excellent command of English, and since you are talking about your first attempt of translating something then go for it and do not translate word by word, read a line and 2, get the idea then translate them to the other language as words and ideas order are not the same in both Arabic and English

The more you learn English the more better your translation will be. I am sure you can have your major at the UNI to be translation and I guess you would learn more and more

let us hear from others and from you and I will be back as I have few things to add
      :)

      Sorry: moved to English saha

Oman, the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, has land borders with Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Oman lies on the Tropic of Cancer, and the total land area is approximately 309,500 sq.kms

    • Dear نور الفلا welcome to the english forum

I can help you in translation techniques as I have done 2 major tests in them and passed them with merits

First of all, you do need to be good in english as well as arabic, but not only the academic english but also the conversational english and arabic.. there are many informal words that may come across and you will need to understand them.

as Tenderness said before, you should understand the main idea and then translate.. the secret here is the way you put your words together, whether you translating an arabic text or english text

you should also be good in terms of knowing the synonymous of words because one word may not be strong enough to reflect the same strength of the meaning of the word you are translating or the sentence you are translating.. also make sure when translating to make sure that the message is interpreted in the same way even if it is translated... because when translating in many cases, the sentence loses its meaning.. so you have to be careful

i will be back if i have something on my mind
    • . hi noor Al Fulla
I think if you have the ambitious to practice and learn more about the translation.. In Shaallah that will be very easy to use. My suggestion as the supervisor for this saha said to you try to understand the whole idea, then translate by your understanding
Avoid translating word by the word because this will not work
    • I m happy to much thanks alot for your advice
Main idead that i got from you
      be good in both languages
      understanding the text well
      reading in both language
avoid translate word by the word
      i have to practice
so i have an idea to help me and all who wants to practice may one of you give us a text every week as a lesson
what do you think about it
      thanks

    • Im back again.. I just wanted to let you know that I have articles that helped me a lot in understanding the translation profession.. I also wanted to know whether you really meant translation or interpreting, because they are different things..

For translation, you will need to be enthusiast, having a good skill in learning languages, and make sense of a sentence rather that a literal translation of the word like Tenderness and Bright Star said

You also need to understand the culture of what you are writing, are you writing about japanese or canadians? are you translating from arabic to english or the opposite? are you translating the same meaning with the same idea or intention? you will need to consider all of these things

Keep in mind that when you translate to stick to professionalism because most of the arabic text is formal arabic and when translating you will need a formal written english style. Having a good academic background in written english is very helpful as well

You will need to understand the areas of the texts as well.. is it in business, technology, medicine? because they have different terms also

will be back after few hours!!i

It would be very helpful if you open a new thread and post a topic with the title "Things to consider when translating" for example.. and you can sumarize whatever points we have discussed here..

and you are most welcome.. if you want me to send you the articles I have, then let me know.. I can zip the file and link it to the forum.. let me know if you do want that.. if you read these articles, you will find that the translation and interpretation is a profession that can die quickly inside a person, but you need to understand it from different aspects and areas..

and yeah I think it will be good to have some text to translate.. and at least be familiar with the arabic words that have different levels of strength in their meaning

      Good luck

What are you refering sensations to in this profession, Tenderness??i

Because I just wanted to understand the connection that you are creating here :)

Ouch, let me check what does the word sensations means first $$-e , I did

Well, we are talking about translating a language to another, and I believe body has its own language, a language that cannot be expressed by words most of the times but it does indeed reflects a state of mind
When writing a scenario you would say
Tenderness cries out (stands up with his left hand on his tie, and and combing his hair with his right), here we translate and put the other party with the state of Tenderness

When translating what one speaks or says his feelings and sensations should be taken in comsideration
      I think
      :)
Sorry if I am not so clear
      $$-e
      OR
could not express my self right

Oh yeah of course.. you're right!! you did express yourself right, but did explain enough for people like me to understand well what you meant :) you know 3ajooz o este3abi is so slow, im still with P2 processor in my mind.. lol..

But yeah, body language is the life saver here.. at least we all agreed on certain body gestures to concieve the meaning of what we are saying.. to eat is to pose or move the way a person is eating for example, then it comes to expressions and feelings of a person, that one can see someone feeling blue, then a person can understand and ask, sad?! just one word is more than enough to ask about the feelings of a person

      ;)
    • to be a good transilator try to keep every thing as itself.

i'm sorry for that but translation wont help you that much in learning english.
      do you know why?
because you have to think in english to be good at english.
i saw your translation it's quite good.that mean you're good in english but you need little more practise.
my advice for you is to read, think and understand the text in english then translate simply in arabic just to understand it not to be profissional in translation.that if you want to learn english in the right way...
